On a seemingly ordinary day at Nassau Community College in New York, an unexpected sight caught the attention of a staff member—a pair of orphaned baby geese aimlessly wandering the halls.
Concerned for their well-being, the staff member carefully placed the little goslings in a box while contemplating their fate.
Soon, the tiny wanderers found themselves under the care of wildlife rehabber Karenlynn Stracher, who knew that time was essential in finding a suitable family.
Understanding the critical window for imprinting, Stracher embarked on a mission to unite the goslings with a mother goose who would accept them as her own.
“The longer goslings are in the care of a human, the greater the risk they will imprint on the wrong species, and then an adoption is impossible.”
She ventured to a nearby pond with the babies in tow for a compatible family. As luck would have it, she stumbled upon a perfect match—a goose family meandering near the water’s edge.
With a mixture of anticipation and hope, Stracher caught the attention of the mother goose and revealed the first baby chick nestled in her hand.
The mother’s gaze locked onto the tiny creature, and Stracher placed the chick on the ground with bated breath, praying for acceptance.
To her delight, the baby bird displayed unmistakable excitement, gladly following the mother goose toward the sparkling pond.
Encouraged by this heartwarming sight, Stracher repeated the process with the second gosling, hopeful for another successful adoption.
As Stracher observed with bated breath, the chicks began integrating themselves into their potential feathered family.
Suddenly, the father goose made his presence known, hissing protectively at Stracher—an incredible sign that he acknowledged the newcomers as his own, defending them against perceived threats.
Overwhelmed with emotion, Stracher couldn’t contain her excitement, joy, relief, and pride at witnessing the harmonious blending of these lives.
“No matter how many times I do this, the minute I realize that the new parents accept, [I’m] filled with a rush of emotions — excitement, joy, relief, pride,” Stracher shared.
In no time, the newly formed family of geese, now complete with their adopted chicks, headed toward the pond.
With graceful guidance from their loving parents, the little goslings joined a group of siblings eagerly awaiting their arrival in the water.

As they merged seamlessly into their newfound family, the goslings were embraced by the warmth and security of a loving goose clan, forever grateful for the extraordinary journey that brought them together.
