While visiting a bird sanctuary in Foz do Iguaçu, Brazil, TikTok user @sheena.ltd experienced a magical and unexpected moment with a hummingbird.
Sheena, an artist and image consultant from Argentina, has a passion for colors in both her personal style and work.
Walking through a lush sanctuary, she sensed being watched and noticed a little hummingbird eyeing her.
“I could feel he was looking at me,” Sheena recalled. “And then he approached me.”
Here’s the video of what happened next:
Approaching her, the tiny bird had mistaken Sheena’s hair for a flower. Although Sheena had no nectar to offer, their interaction was filled with sweetness.
“It was a magical moment. I don’t know how to describe it.”
The encounter left Sheena feeling incredibly special, making it an unforgettable and cherished experience.
“I am an animal lover. This encounter could not have been more incredible. It makes you feel very special.”
Hummingbirds are attracted to vibrant colors, especially bright and vivid hues, for several reasons:
- Nectar Sources: Many hummingbirds feed on flowers that have brightly colored petals, which act as visual cues to attract the birds. These colors signal the presence of nectar-rich blooms, the main food source for hummingbirds.
- Visual Acuity: Hummingbirds have excellent color vision and can see various colors, including ultraviolet light. They are particularly sensitive to red, orange, and pink hues. Bright colors stand out to them and help them locate potential food sources more easily.
- Pollination: Hummingbirds play a crucial role in pollination. By being attracted to vibrant colors, they are more likely to visit flowers and transfer pollen from one flower to another, facilitating plant reproduction.
- Territory Defense: Male hummingbirds are known for their territorial behavior and use vibrant colors to display their dominance. Brightly colored throat patches or “gorgets” are used in aggressive displays and courtship rituals to attract mates and establish their territory.
The attraction of hummingbirds to vivid colors, including Shenna’s hair, is a combination of their visual acuity, the association of bright colors with nectar-rich food sources, and the role of color in their reproductive behaviors.
