Fate intervened over 14 years ago as farmer Josemar Milli and his wife explored a wooded area near their Brazilian home. Their eyes were drawn to two fragile baby parrots stranded on the ground by a fallen tree.

Without hesitation, the compassionate couple decided to save them, unknowingly setting off a chain of events that would change multiple lives.

As the birds grew under their care, one flew away into the wild, while the other, whom they named Louro, chose to remain by their side.

“We named her Louro. She was never caged. She just never wanted to leave.”

Louro, a free spirit, had always been welcomed on Milli’s shoulder. However, a recent change in her routine caught his attention.

She began sleeping away from home and spending her days near a wooden fencepost.

“Louro has always slept at home, but then, for three nights, she slept somewhere else. And during the day, she started staying near this [hollow] wooden fencepost.”

Intrigued, Milli investigated and discovered the reason behind Louro’s newfound dedication.

To his surprise, the parrot had stumbled upon three helpless kittens in the hollow post and had become their surrogate mother. A neighbor’s cat had seemingly abandoned the kittens, and Louro’s maternal instincts had kicked in just in time.

Milli tried to reintroduce the kittens to their original feline parent, but she rejected them, leaving Louro as their sole caretaker. The bond between Louro and the kittens was undeniable—she considered them her own babies.

“She thinks of them as her babies.”

The Milli family rallied together, adopting the kittens and providing them a loving home. Even their resident cat joined in, nurturing the newfound family members.

“We brought them home and are taking care of them. My daughters will be keeping them.”

Louro, a wild bird saved and raised by an unconventional family, had found it within herself to offer love and protection to a different species. Her act of kindness ensured that the kittens not only survived but thrived.

They would forever be cherished by Milli’s daughters, embodying the spirit of love that Louro had shown them. With her unwavering devotion, Louro continued to remain close to her extended family.

In her journey from rescue to freedom, this parrot learned the power of love and chose to share it selflessly with others.
